AVID is a college preparatory program that focuses on students who are academically proficient yet need support in succeeding in advanced academic courses. AVID bridges student gaps in the skills, language, habits and resources of the college-bound student. Additionally, students in AVID receive academic and motivational support. Other aspects of the program include: Field trips to places of educational and cultural interest, tutoring by college students, partnership with the University Colorado-Boulder through Public Achievement.
All AVID curriculum is based on a methodology called WIC-R, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. These represent the four skills all students must have to succeed in college preparatory coursework and to make it to a four-year university. Curriculum based on WIC-R improves students' critical thinking skills, reading comprehension, written communication, and ability to guide and be guided by their peers.
